Reverse Culture Shock
It’s been a really strange week being at home, but I also feel like I am experiencing reverse culture shock ten times worse than the culture shock I experienced the first few weeks in Beijing. I cannot do anything without thinking of how it would have been in China.
The grocery store… I was so happy to see cheese and milk everywhere (meat and fish without bones too)! HOWEVER, my god...
The Last Blog Post on Chinese Soil
Sorry I have inundated my facebook and tumblr with these posts, but I feel the need to get them out while I am still in China. The last few days have been extremely emotional, and I have been completely unable to function in many situations. There has been a lot of sitting there, not knowing what to do with myself. I have met to many wonderful people, and it breaks my heart to say goodbye to them...
Kunming
We rounded out the trip in Kunming, after a long bus ride and taxi from Dali. Also ate some food at a rest stop without getting ill, so yay to the passing of food sickness. We had our last group dinner, with the usual mix of Sichuan cai. I was able to skype my parents and read while a lot of people worked on some final papers.
That night we went to a hostel called The Hump. Met a kid who is doing...
Dali →
Yet again… posted to the wrong blog.
foreignknot:
Dali was probably my favorite place, however I’m not sure if that’s related to the amount of time we stayed there, which was much shorter than Lijiang. After dinner, in which we ordered everything on the menu at the restaurant, we wandered a bit. The city is very obviously becoming pretty…
Lijiang
Lijiang is an absolutely amazing place, which is why we spent a ridiculous amount of time there. The Naxi people are the natives, who I find much more attractive than Han Chinese. They’re extremely tan and seem almost nymph like at times. However, they are another example of the commercialization of ethnic minorities in China. Much like the Hui in Xi’an, much of the area we were in was devoted to...
Chengdu
We took a bus back to Chengdu. Our hotel was interesting… the shower was horrible but everything else was fine. The first night we got hot pot, which was absolutely amazing, though fairly expensive. I really like mushrooms and vegetables in hot pot, but what really caught me was the warm squash drink on the side. That night we explored the nightlife for the city. After looking around a shopping...
Leshan
The flight to Chengdu… I don’t really remember, I slept through most of it. We then took a bus out to Leshan, which is a super interesting and strange city. The hotel was absolutely gorgeous; we had a balcony. Victoria and I had a really strange lunch, in which we basically just told the woman to make whatever she felt like because we did not have a menu or know any of the food she seemed to be...

Green Line Travels: Xi'an
Arrived in Xi’an after sharing a compartment with Eric for the overnight sleeper train from Beijing. Definitely appreciated the sleeper train after having experienced 16-hour hard seats when going to Hua Shan and Tian Shui. We then got to rest and eat at the food street nearby; we got what we’re calling Chinese quesadillas. We almost immediately went to the Terra Cotta Warriors, which were really...
It's starting to be that time...
That time where I pack up my entire room, take down my wall of tickets, posters, and drawings, and get ready for a two week trip around China, only to come back to Beijing for a few days then leave this country. I’m already getting way too emotional about this, and have been set off by some of the dumbest things, but this has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I’m...
